About us
Hello, from Craig and Theresa Schwarten and Little Bear Berners
Little Bear Berners is a family owned kennel located north of the twin cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis in Minnesota. We are located in the country on five acres within an hour of the Twin Cities International Airport. The family is Dr. Craig and Theresa Schwarten, our grown children, our grandchildren, the cat and of course our Berners. (But mostly Craig and Theresa and the dogs when the others aren't around.) Over twenty years ago we fell in love with these magnificent animals called Bernese Mountain Dogs and we can't seem to get enough of them (especially the babies.)When we first started looking for a Berner of our own, we found it very difficult to find breeders who balanced a love of the dogs with a common sense approach for providing quality companions to people seeking them. Many breeders throughout the country seemed unfriendly or unresponsive to inquiries, or excessively restrictive in their screening process and contract covenants. We also found other breeders that would breed any dogs they could, to sell any puppy to any person regardless of quality or character. We experienced first hand a dishonest importer selling dogs with bogus papers and promises that the papers would transfer to the AKC registry. We also believe, as many other breeders do, that puppy mills and broker imported dogs are partly the result of not enough quality breeders and education to meet the growing interest in the breed. We hope to help change that!
As part of our love of the breed we are members of the Anoka County Minnesota Kennel Club and have been active in the conformation show ring, draft dog events, Berner rescue and re-homing, and other activities to educate people about the joys and responsibilities of having a Berner in the family. We have been breeding and raising Bernese Mountain Dogs for almost 20 years. We are currently in our 6th and 7th generations of puppies and usualy try to have 3-4 litters a year. We believe that the Bernese Mountain Dog is the most wonderful dog on the planet and the experience of owning one is a great gift. Our goal is to provide quality puppies for loving people who will appreciate them as an extraordinary addition to their family. We hope to build a large family of new friends that will share our love of the Bernese Mountain Dog.Having a Berner in your life is one of God's great blessings! Having one of ours makes you part of the Little Bear Berner Family!
